Inferred Organism

The Inferred Organism

Ten questions about evidence in computational biology

The organism is not drawn. Each point is an observation, and ten of them are chapters. The dashed outline is a hypothesis fitted through those ten. It stays a hypothesis until the evidence is in.

Every output of a pipeline is a shadow of an organism nobody can observe directly. This book is about how we license claims about it.

Every chapter has the same anatomy: a live controversy · the philosophical tools that sharpen it · a small simulation · a Monday-morning rule · open problems.
An open book: Challenge a claim, add a case, or propose a counterexample through issue templates. Each chapter reviewed by a philosopher of science and a practitioner, to be named.
